VenaSeal®
The VenaSeal® procedure is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a specially formulated medical adhesive to permanently close diseased veins that cause varicose veins.
VenaSeal® does not require multiple needle injections along the vein, making it a comfortable treatment option for many patients. It also avoids the risks of general anesthesia and the prolonged recovery, discomfort, and scarring associated with vein stripping.
The VenaSeal® procedure is performed on an outpatient basis in our clinic. Using ultrasound guidance, your vascular surgeon inserts a small catheter into the affected vein through a tiny opening in the skin. The medical adhesive is then delivered along the length of the vein, sealing it closed.
Once the vein is closed, blood is naturally redirected to healthy veins, and the treated varicose vein gradually shrinks and fades over time.
After the procedure, a small bandage is placed over the insertion site, and compression may be applied to support healing. Most patients return to their normal daily activities within 24 hours.
Unlike endovenous laser treatment (EVLT), VenaSeal uses a medical adhesive to close the diseased vein instead of heat. Because it doesn't rely on heat, it also avoids the multiple injections of local anesthetic that are typically needed for laser treatment.
VenaSeal offers several benefits, including:
- Less pain and discomfort during the procedure
- Faster recovery
- Long-lasting results
- The ability to treat multiple diseased veins in a single visit, when appropriate
Vein stripping is a surgical procedure that removes the diseased vein through incisions in the groin and leg. It typically requires general anesthesia and a longer recovery period.
VenaSeal is a minimally invasive alternative that seals the vein from the inside using a medical adhesive, allowing your body to naturally redirect blood flow to healthy veins.
Compared with vein stripping, VenaSeal can help you avoid:
- General anesthesia
- Multiple incisions and visible scarring
- More postoperative pain and the potential need for prescription pain medication
- A recovery period of several weeks
Today, most patients with varicose veins are candidates for minimally invasive treatments such as VenaSeal. During your consultation, our vascular surgeons will assess your veins with ultrasound and recommend the treatment option that is most appropriate for your condition.
Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) does not cover VenaSeal. However, some private insurance companies do. Make sure to consult your insurance provider to determine if the treatment is covered by your plan.

The VenaSeal procedure typically takes about one hour.
Most patients return to their usual daily activities within 1–2 days after the procedure.
For the first two weeks, we recommend:
- Wearing your compression stockings as directed
- Walking regularly to promote healthy circulation
- Avoiding heavy lifting and other strenuous activities
- Limiting prolonged periods of standing when possible
Your vascular surgeon will provide personalized recovery instructions based on your treatment and overall health
Many patients notice an improvement in their symptoms within 1–2 weeks after the procedure. The appearance of treated veins will continue to improve as your body naturally absorbs the closed vein over time.
Results vary depending on the severity of your vein disease. Most patients experience an improvement in both the appearance of their legs and symptoms such as aching, heaviness, swelling, and discomfort. Your vascular surgeon will discuss the results you can expect based on your individual condition during your consultation.
Most patients experience little to no discomfort following VenaSeal. Mild bruising or tenderness at the treatment site is possible, but these symptoms are typically temporary and resolve as you heal.
During your consultation, one of our vascular surgeons will perform an assessment, including an ultrasound, to determine whether VenaSeal is the most appropriate treatment for your condition. If another treatment option is better suited to your needs, we'll discuss those recommendations with you as part of your personalized care plan.
Age alone is not a determining factor for VenaSeal treatment. The most important step is a comprehensive assessment, including an ultrasound performed by one of our vascular surgeons, to evaluate your vein health.
VenaSeal has been successfully used to treat adult men and women of many different ages. During your consultation, your surgeon will determine whether it is the most appropriate treatment for your individual condition.
